RTL XL Direct Links

Dutch (well, officially it's based in Luxembourgish) TV station RTL has a platform called RTL XL. On this platform they publish their videos. With all the current events in the world, it's nice to sometimes be able to watch their videos. Unfortunately, RTL XL insists on using Silverlight, even though not all videos are crippled with DRM. Especially the news videos are - thankfully - DRM-free. Still: Silverlight - or Moonlight - on Linux is somewhat troublesome...

Dutch (well, officially it's based in Luxembourg) TV station RTL has a platform called RTL XL. On this platform they publish their videos. With all the current events in the world, it's nice to sometimes be able to watch their videos. Unfortunately, RTL XL insists on using Silverlight, even though not all videos are crippled with DRM. Especially the news videos are - thankfully - DRM-free. Still: Silverlight - or Moonlight - on Linux is somewhat troublesome.

So I wanted to be able to view those videos without having to install Moonlight on my Linux systems. After a bit of coding, I am now able to get the direct links to videos on RTL.nl and RTL XL. The videos can then be streamed using e.g. VLC or MPlayer. All thanks to GreaseMonkey and mad coding skillz ;-)

If you use Firefox, install GreaseMonkey and install the user script. For other browsers, check this page about possibilities of using the script. The script adds a link to the video when a page on RTL contains a video.

The code is GPLv3 (I will soon update the license information in the script ;-) ). You can view the Git repository right here, or clone it from git://git.simply-life.net/simply-life.net/userscripts/rtlnl_media_url.
